Unnao Rape Case: Background of the Case
The Unnao rape case returned to public attention in December 2025.
The case began in 2017, when a minor girl was assaulted in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh.
After years of hearings, a CBI court convicted former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in 2019.
The court awarded him life imprisonment for the crime.
He was also convicted in a separate case linked to the custodial death of the survivor’s father.
Due to safety concerns, the Supreme Court shifted the trial from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi.
Bail Granted by Delhi High Court
On December 23, the Delhi High Court suspended Sengar’s life sentence.
The court granted him bail while his appeal remains pending.
Judges noted that he had already spent several years in prison.
The court imposed strict conditions for his release.
He must stay in Delhi and avoid the survivor and her family.
The order bans any direct or indirect contact with them.
Public Anger and Survivor’s Response
The bail order triggered sharp reactions across the country.
The survivor and her mother said the decision caused deep emotional pain.
They questioned whether justice was truly being delivered.
They announced plans to approach the Supreme Court.
Women’s rights groups and political leaders staged protests in New Delhi.
Police detained several protesters near Parliament and the High Court.
CBI Moves Supreme Court
The CBI soon challenged the High Court order in the Supreme Court.
The agency warned that the decision could weaken public trust in justice.
It urged the court to cancel the bail and restore the sentence.
What Happens Next
The Supreme Court will hear the matter on December 29, 2025.
The verdict may decide whether Sengar stays free or returns to prison.
